Southern Neighborhoods and Urban Growth

Thursday, August 23, 2018

Title: Southern Neighborhoods and Urban Growth: engage with historian Tom Hanchett for a presentation and facilitated discussion led by Mooresville Police Chief Damon Williams. Historian Tom Hanchett looks back at how Southern cities have evolved in the New South focusing on Mill Towns like Mooresville and delve into trends today. He’ll use Charlotte as a case study to explore the surprising ways that patterns of race and wealth have changed over time. Dr. Tom Hanchett is a community historian in Charlotte, recently retired from Levine Museum of the New South. He earned his PhD in urban and Southern history from UNC Chapel Hill and is author of the book Sorting Out the New South City, a history of the Queen City. He’s a popular speaker, dubbed “Charlotte’s Dr. History” by Charlotte Magazine, and he writes the monthly “Food from Home” restaurant column in the Charlotte Observer.
