Recruitment
If you are interested in applying for a position as a firefighter, review the basic requirements listed below and visit the Town's Human Resources Employment page for job postings.
Eligibility Requirements for applicants seeking a firefighter position with the Mooresville Fire & Rescue include:
∙ Be at least 18 years of age
∙ Have a high school diploma or GED
∙ Have a valid driver's license and a good driving record
∙ Have no felony convictions or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude
∙ Have no illegal drug use within the last 12 months
∙ Meet the medical requirements set forth in NFPA 1582
The following is a step-by-step process for applying with the Mooresville Fire & Rescue if there is a position advertised:
Applications: Employment applications are available on-line for downloading or applicants may visit the Town’s Human Resources Department in Town Hall. Note: Submit copies of certifications or other documentation with your Town application.
Entrance Exam: All applicants are scheduled to take a nationally-validated entrance examination which measures numerous abilities and general fire knowledge. A combined passing score is required to progress from the Entrance Exam to the Agility Test. The entrance examination will not be scored on the day of the test. Notification is sent to applicants advising them of their results - either passing or failure.
The next written exam is tentatively set for the Fall 2010. When the date is established, details for registration will be posted on this site.
Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT): All applicants who successfully complete the entrance exam will progress to the CPAT. Upon arriving for this test, applicants must present a medical release form from their physician stating they are minimally fit to participate in the CPAT. With all forms submitted, the applicant is allowed to attempt the CPAT. Applicants are notified of their status (pass/fail) in this segment of the process before they leave the drill yard.
Candidates List: Candidates who obtain passing status are then placed on an eligibility list by scores.
Applicant Interview: Applicants who successfully complete the CPAT are scheduled for a panel interview consisting of chief officers from the department.
Conditional Offer of Employment: As the department has vacancies, candidates are scheduled for a conditional offer of employment.
Drug Test Screening: Within 24 hours of a conditional offer of employment, a drug-screening test must be conducted and provide negative results.
Physical: A medical screening in accordance with NFPA 1001 must result in the department physician’s signature of compliance with applicable NFPA standards.
DO NOT CALL TO CHECK ON YOUR STATUS.
Important Notice for Out of Town Applicants: Applicants will need to be in Mooresville several times to complete the employment process. While we will make every effort to accommodate travel arrangements for applicants, MFD flexibility depends on time and scheduling constraints.
Recruiting
A Recruit Training Class spans a period of four weeks during which recruits receive entry-level training and certifications. A Training Chief is assigned to each recruit class to be a Leader, Mentor and to assist with anything the recruits may need. Also, the Training Chief administers physical fitness training which is required during the duration of the recruit training process. After a thorough application process (usually three - four months) it is an accomplishment to be chosen for an appointment to the Mooresville Fire Department Recruit Training.
During the four weeks in recruit training, recruits receive initial training in three disciplines: Firefighting, Rescue and Hazardous Material. After successfully completing Recruit Training, each recruit is assigned to a fire company (either Ladder Company or Engine Company) as a Firefighter I. During this time recruits will put their training to the test as a firefighter under the direction of their Fire Captain and senior firefighters. This is where recruits receive firefighting experience and gain valuable knowledge.
